WHAT IS LASER?
Laser is and acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Which simply means it is a special type of light that is narrow beam and non-divergent. Another characteristic of laser is that it emits light which is of one pure colour. While certain application of laser technology uses high power emissions for cutting metal or for surgery there is also low level laser which can be used to promote health. Surgical laser uses power output of 25 to 100 watts while low level laser emits between 2 and 10 milliwatts. This low level does not create a thermal effect on tissue but can be used to stimulate normal biological processes for healing. Lasers were first used in the west for acupoint stimulation, a non-invasive alternative to acupuncture. It is an excellent means to stimulate acupuncture points and has been found to be as effective as needles in point stimulation. It is especially effective in treatment for smoking addiction, migraine headache, obesity, and pain relief. The Chinese have documented studies in using laser to induce acupuncture analgesia for oral surgery.
